Previous ITMEMS

ITMEMS has been convened previously in Australia (1998), the Philippines (2003) and Mexico (2006).

The three previous ITMEMS have provided an important opportunity for people working to conserve tropical marine ecosystems to come together with their peers and partners to share experiences and lessons learned; debate gaps and priorities for future action to manage tropical marine ecosystems; and strengthen and expand their contact networks.

ITMEMS3

ITMEMS 3ITMEMS 3 took place in Mexico, in October 2006, and combined innovative events with problem solving workshops to seek positive responses to the increasing threats faced, and underscore the interrelationship between conservation and development, and the role of local user communities in managing marine ecosystems.

ITMEMS2

ITMEMS 2 The second International Tropical Marine Ecosystem Management Symposium (ITMEMS2) was a major outcome of the Joint Philippines-Sweden Secretariat of the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI). It built on the foundation and approach of the first ITMEMS with the aim of creating a gathering to maximise productive discussion and information sharing by people involved in management of coral reefs and related ecosystems. The Symposium brought together managers, scientists and stakeholders and focused on a range of issues that they had earlier identified as priorities in the management of coral reefs and related ecosystems.

ITMEMS1

The first International Tropical Marine Ecosystems Management Symposium (ITMEMS1), was held in Townsville, Australia in November 1998, gathering over 300 delegates. ITMEMS was designed to complement the International Coral Reef Symposia (ICRS) by providing a forum for managers of coral reefs and related ecosystems to discuss issues and share experiences.
