ITMEMS 3

The third ITMEMS, held in Cozumel, Mexico, in October 2006, provided an opportunity to exchange lessons learned, good practices, and effective local solutions amongst peers and to develop communication networks within the tropical ecosystem management community.

Thirteen themes were identified for discussion at ITMEMS3. A program of short-format participatory workshops and field trips, designed and run by participants, sought to address the burning issues and priorities relevant to each theme and draw up specific action recommendations for submission to ICRI. The International Coral Reef Action Network (ICRAN) was the contracted organiser for ITMEMS3.

ITMEMS3 and the ICRI General Meeting (GM) were held back to back in Cozumel, creating a direct pathway between the two meetings. The agendas of the two meetings were designed and developed in tandem to maximize interaction between managers and policy makers.

Delegates from ITMEMS3 were invited to address the ICRI GM to deliver the ITMEMS3 Final Statement and emphasise key action points. The Mayor of Cozumel shared the outcomes of the Special Session on Local Government, which drew out the importance of engaging effective local political, community and indigenous leadership to achieve sustainable management and conservation of tropical marine and coastal ecosystems and natural resources.
